about

Pierre Terblanche is an African drummer, drum maker, teacher, scholar, workshop facilitator. He was elected to perform as one of twelve presidential drummers for the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the first democratically elected leader of South Africa.

The rhythmscapes featured on this compilation document his journey into the magical world of traditional African rhythms dating back to 1991 when he started making drums.

All the djembes, konkeni, sangban, dununba, bougarabou and some of the Afro-congas, bows and other percussion heard on Mothertongue have been handmade by Pierre.

He and his wife Ushka Mrcusic ( a dancer, yoga teacher, story teller and writer) have been involved in performance art and workshop facilitation since the early nineties when they formed the band Earthlings. It gained a cult following at the time and played a pivotal role in introducing the djembe drum from West Africa and the didgeridoo from Australia to audiences in South Africa.
